The Executive Director COMSATS, Dr. S. M. Junaid Zaidi, held a meeting with Mr. Khalid Al-Yasin, Counsellor / Deputy Head of Mission of the State of Kuwait, in his office at Embassy of Kuwait in Islambad, Pakistan. Ambassador (R) Ms. Fauzia Nasreen, Advisor (SDGs), and Mr. Naim Uddin Anwar, Consultant, HCA, COMSATS Secretariat, accompanied Dr. Zaidi for the meeting held on 17th January 2019.
The main agenda of the meeting was to introduce the Deputy Head of Mission to the membership drive of COMSATS that has gathered pace under the leadership of Dr. Zaidi. This has resulted in addition of three countries, Turkey, Somalia and Yemen, as members of the Organization. It was apprised that the membership campaign for the State of Kuwait was initiated in 1999. In this regard, former Executive Director COMSATS, Dr. I.E. Qureshi, had paid a visit to the country during which he also visited several leading Kuwaiti R&D/S&T institutions. Dr. Zaidi highlighted the benefits of joining COMSATS as a member country. The idea of Kuwait becoming COMSATS’ Member State was given due importance by the Deputy Head of Mission and he pledged to follow-up the matter with relevant government authorities in Kuwait.
During the meeting, Mr. Khalid Al-Yasin was also briefed about the on-going and future projects of COMSATS, one of which is the establishment of COMSATS University in Nigeria and Sri Lanka. COMSATS’ programmes aimed at achieving sustainable socio-economic development in its member states were also noted. Further, it was anticipated that Kuwait’s scientific institutions could engage in meaningful collaborations with COMSATS’ Centres of Excellence through COMSATS’ platform. Kuwait’s research/scientific institutions have also invited to join as COMSATS Centre of Excellence. Moreover, information regarding the forthcoming meetings of COMSATS’ statutory bodies, i.e., General Meeting of the Commission and Consultative Committee was also passed on to Mr. Khalid Al-Yasin.
The Executive Director COMSATS handed over COMSATS’ information material to His Excellency and looked forward to nurturing bilateral cooperation with Kuwait in emerging areas of S&T for sustainable development of the South.
