Ms. Anne Marchal, Deputy Head of Mission, Delegation of the European Union to Pakistan was invited to COMSATS Secretariat in order to further explore potential opportunities of collaboration with the European Union (EU) in areas of mutual benefit. The meeting held on 3rd October 2019 was steered by the Executive Director COMSATS, Dr. S. M. Junaid Zaidi, and had the presence of COMSATS’ officials.

A briefing was given to Ms. Marchal on COMSATS’ operations, scope of its programmes and international outreach of the Organization. Dr. Zaidi also acquainted her with COMSATS’ future initiatives and forthcoming General Meeting of the Commission to be held in conjunction with the Accra Forum on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development, at the end of October.

It was communicated by Ms. Marchal that the Delegation of the European Union to Pakistan is undertaking projects in various areas of global concern, including Climate Change, Biotechnology, Agriculture and Food Security. She informed that the next round of call for project applications will commence from 2020.

Ms. Marchal proposed that a meeting may be held with the newly appointed European Union Ambassador Designate to Pakistan, Ms. Androulla Kaminara, at the beginning of next year where reciprocal briefing on the operations of the two organizations may be given for better identification of areas of mutual interest.

The meeting ended with the assurance of support from Ms. Marchal for the execution of projects in the Member States of COMSATS.

The Fourth General Meeting of COMSATS, Accra, Ghana

COMSATS General Meeting is the apex forum that brings together the Heads of Member States (currently 27) for highest level policy guidelines and general direction for the organization’s programmes in pursuit of its mission. The first General Meeting of the Commission was held in 1994 that led to the establishment of COMSATS itself. Since then, two more meetings have been held in Islamabad (16-17 April 2012), and Accra (27-28 October 2015), respectively. The fourth General Meeting of the Commission convened by Hon. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo, President of Ghana, is scheduled to be held on 29th October 2019, in Accra, Ghana.

The Accra Forum on S&T for Sustainable Development being organized under the patronage of COMSATS’ national focal point in Ghana, the Ghanaian Ministry for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation will create awareness, share information on available mechanisms and tools for SDGs implementation, apart from recommending approaches to accelerate progress towards 2030 Global Agenda. During the Forum, Heads of State/Government and Ministerial-level officials; representatives from United Nation agencies and other international organizations; members of the diplomatic community; stakeholders from private sector, research organization; academia and media, through dialogues, debates and group meetings will deliberate upon the ways and means for effective translation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
