A Farewell to a Visionary Leader

A Farewell to a Visionary Leader, Ambassador Dr. M. Nafees Zakaria, Executive Director, COMSATS Secretariat | 2022–2026

Four years may mark the completion of a tenure, but the legacy of a visionary leader is never measured in years alone. It is measured in the lives he touches, the institutions he strengthens, the relationships he restores, and the hope he leaves behind.

As we bid farewell to our respected Executive Director, Ambassador Dr. M. Nafees Zakaria, we do so with hearts filled with gratitude, admiration, and a deep sense of loss. His four-year journey at the COMSATS Secretariat has been much more than a period of leadership. It has been a journey of vision, resilience, transformation, and unwavering commitment to the mission of COMSATS.

Ambassador Zakaria brought with him a rare combination of diplomatic wisdom, institutional understanding, international acumen, and an extraordinary ability to turn challenges into opportunities. His experience and vision gave a renewed direction to COMSATS and breathed new life into relationships with our Centres of Excellence, national focal points, international partners, and member states. Relationships that had become dormant were revitalised, communication was strengthened, and a renewed spirit of cooperation began to emerge. Through his diplomatic insight and personal engagement, he reminded us that COMSATS is not merely an organisation; it is a family of nations united by the shared belief that science, technology, and innovation can transform societies.

Under his leadership, science-led initiatives and projects gained renewed momentum. He encouraged us to think beyond routine institutional work, to explore new possibilities, and to translate ideas into meaningful outcomes. He made us believe that even the most difficult tasks could become achievable when approached with clarity, commitment, and collective effort. His vision was never confined to the present; he consistently looked towards a stronger, more relevant, and more impactful COMSATS.

But perhaps the most profound part of his legacy lies in the people he has inspired. He taught us not merely through instructions, but through his conduct, his experience, his patience, and his example. He shared the wisdom of a distinguished diplomatic career, guided us through complex situations, and instilled in us the confidence to take responsibility and deliver.

He taught us the importance of professionalism, perseverance, integrity, diplomacy, and above all, the value of believing in the mission we serve. Many of us will carry these lessons throughout our professional lives, long after his tenure has ended. We have witnessed the immense challenges he faced during these four years. There were difficult circumstances, controversies, institutional constraints, and moments when the support he deserved was perhaps not forthcoming. Yet, through it all, he remained steadfast. He continued to serve with dignity, patience, and an unwavering sense of responsibility. There were countless nights when he burned the midnight oil, working tirelessly to keep the flag of COMSATS flying high. His commitment was not always visible to everyone, but those who worked closely with him know how much of himself he gave to this institution.

Some burdens were heavier than they should have been. Some challenges were more difficult than they deserved to be. And some of the struggles he endured were never truly reflected in the achievements that followed. Yet he continued to move forward, placing the institution above personal comfort and the mission above adversity. That is the mark of a true leader.

As we reflect upon his tenure, we recognise not only the achievements he leaves behind, but also the strength, courage, and determination with which he pursued them. His contribution to COMSATS cannot be captured in reports, projects, meetings, or official proceedings alone. It is reflected in the renewed confidence of our international partners, the strengthened bonds with our Centres of Excellence, the initiatives he inspired, and the people he encouraged to believe in their own potential.

On behalf of the entire COMSATS Secretariat and COMSATS Internet Services (CIS), we extend our deepest gratitude to Ambassador Dr. M. Nafees Zakaria for his visionary leadership, distinguished service, mentorship, and the countless sacrifices he made for this organisation.

Sir, you have not only led us; you have taught us. You have not only guided the institution; you have strengthened the people who serve it. And you have not only completed a tenure; you have left behind a legacy that will continue to inspire us. As you embark upon the next chapter of your distinguished journey, we wish you the very best in life. May you be blessed with good health, peace, happiness, and the recognition that your extraordinary service so rightfully deserves. We sincerely hope that your association with COMSATS continues, because the wisdom, experience, and leadership you bring are invaluable to this institution.

Your departure will leave a void that cannot easily be filled. The corridors of COMSATS may continue to echo with the routine of everyday work, but those of us who have had the privilege of working under your leadership will always remember the difference you made. Thank you, Sir, for your vision. Thank you for your guidance. Thank you for standing firm when circumstances were difficult. And thank you for giving so much of yourself to COMSATS. You may be completing your four-year tenure, but your contribution, your lessons, and your legacy will remain with us.

With profound respect, heartfelt gratitude, and our warmest wishes,
The COMSATS Secretariat and COMSATS Internet Services (CIS)
