This year, the United Nations, on World Environment Day, is highlighting the importance of land restoration, desertification and drought resilience. The theme “land restoration, desertification and drought resilience” and the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration” draws global attention to the central role productive land can play to help reverse climate change and promoting sustainable development.
It is an alarming fact that approximately twelve million hectares of arable land are lost globally each year. This loss has far-reaching consequences for human well-being and sustainable livelihoods, which are intricately linked to the health and productivity of the land. The impact is particularly severe in developing countries that lack the necessary capital and infrastructure. By addressing these issues collectively, World Environment Day seeks to remind and mobilize individuals, communities, and governments to protect and restore our environment, fostering a more sustainable and resilient future.
This year, the COMSATS Centre for Climate & Sustainability (CCCS), in collaboration with the partner organizations, observing the occasion on 5th June in Pakistan with a high-level Panel Discussion, in Islamabad, Pakistan. Ms. Romina Khurshid Alam, Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Ministry of Climate Change & Environmental Coordination, Government of Pakistan, has consented to open the event. The occasion will afford the opportunity to explore and address the underlying causes of drought, desertification, and land degradation, approaches to suggest solutions and strategize way forward in tandem with global efforts to combat land degradation and unsustainable resource management practices.
