Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS)

ICCES-China

International Center for Climate and Environment Sciences (ICCES), China

Introduction:

ICCES was established in 1991 with a mandate to meet the urgent need of solving climate and environment related problems. ICCES is being supported by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST), National Natural Science Foundation, and Ministry of Finance, China. Currently, ICCES comprises of 48 staff members, including 14 professors; 11 associate professors; 17 assistant professors; and 2 senior engineers.

Focus Areas:

The focused areas of research are: development of Dynamical Earth System Model and Numerical Simulation; Meteorological and Environmental Forecast and related Disaster Assessment Theory and Technique; Data Assimilation Theory and Methodology; and Earth System Theory and Natural Cybernetics. ICCES is currently executing 60 research projects.

Laboratories:

There are various computational simulation and modeling laboratories at ICCES.

Expertise:

ICCES has expertise in Studies on the Climate Dynamics and Monsoon System; Development of Climate System Models and the Associated Climate Simulation; Short-term Climate Prediction; Disastrous Weather Dynamics and Prediction; Ecosystem and Environmental Dynamics and Natural Cybernetics; and Atmospheric Informatics and Data Assimilation. ICCES also offers 5 post-doctoral fellowships for COMSATS Member States.

Looking for:

ICCES is looking for research collaborations in various fields of climate sciences, including studying the characteristics and mechanisms of extreme weather events.

Collaboration with other Centres

  • Industrial Technology Institute (ITI), Sri Lanka: ICCES, in collaboration with ITI, would establish the Center for Extreme Climatic Events & Environmental Research (CECEER) in Colombo, under the MoU signed in May 2015. Moreover, ICCES is collaborating with ITI and has started a research project on hydrological changing characteristics in Mahaweli watershed. The project is focused on Mahaweli watershed, whereby meteorological data has been collected in this area for characteristics research of extreme climate events. The goal is to build up a large-scale land surface hydrological coupling model for Mahaweli watershed, and to start simulation study of hydrology and water resources process and evolution. The project is part of China-Sri Lanka Science & Education Cooperation project Under the Belt and Road Initiative.
  • National Research Centre (NRC), Egypt: ICCES and NRC signed two MoUs / Intent of Cooperation for collaboration in 2017 and 2018, under the umbrella of COMSATS for achieving common objectives.
  • Iranian Research Organization for Science & Technology (IROST), Iran: In 2014, Prof. Zhaohui Lin, Director ICCES visited IROST; Soil Conservation and Watershed Management Research Institute (SCWMRI); and Iranian Meteorological Organization where they had signed MoU regarding the scientific cooperation between ICCES and Iranian institutes.
  • COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI): Mr. Tahir Naeem, Director of Planning, Development and Human Resource Development, CUI, and Dr. Bahadar Nawab Khattak, Head of Department of Development Studies/Sustainable Sanitation, CUI, visited ICCES, in 2016. Prof. Lin proposed a joint research project on identifying features and impacts of climate change along the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor for the past 20 years by using and comparing meteorological data collected from both sides. Mr. Naeem and Dr. Nawab assured to encourage more eligible students from CUI to apply for further study at ICCES, and envisioned more joint articles published through future collaboration. Likewise, in April 2017, a delegation from CUI led by Prof. Javaid Anwar and Prof. Muhammad Shahzad visited ICCES. During meetings, both sides expressed their strong desire to work together on aerosol related issues.
  • The International Centre of Physics (CIF), Colombia: In December 2017, Dr. Jamie Erazo from CIF paid a visit to ICCES. Dr. Erazo has proposed a joint research project focusing on climate change and disaster modelling in order to better cope with the climatic and environmental hazards in Columbia, with the help of ICCES expertise. ICCES’ would also like to have access to the satellite date and meteorological observation data from Columbian authorities in an effort to conduct joint research. A preliminary dialogue on the joint international conference or training workshop was also conducted.
